Inspired by the popular format of poetry slam, the composer slam is a competition for young composers. The Orchester im Treppenhaus is taking this idea to a whole new level and invites composers from all over europe to take part in the first european championship.
A jury will choose one application from each country and present them online. The six participants will be selected via online voting.
The six participants hand in a piece of contemporary music for a fixed chamber orchestra instrumentation and compete with each other in February in the Pavillon Hannover. They have to join the performance of their own pieces, but are free to choose in which way: as soloist, conductor, with a video presentation or a performative part… Additionally the composers can install special lighting or involve the room in the performance.
The whole event will be streamed. So that not only the local audience, but audiences from all over Europe can follow the performances and vote for their favourite pieces. In two rounds with three compositions each, the public votes two finalists who will perform their pieces again in a final round.
After another audience voting the winner will be elected as european champion!
What can classical music do today? The Orchester im Treppenhaus (‚orchestra in the stairwell‘) has been working on an expanded conceptual understanding of what a concert can be for a couple of years now. With great playfulness and the drive to explore the limits of live concert situations, their work opens doors to new listening experiences, intimate moments and surprising contents. The concert becomes an experience. Classical music becomes performance. Always connecting reality with moments of great surprise.
With its concert projects, the orchestra has become one of the leading representatives of the innovative classical music scene in Germany and Europe in recent years. Their concert formats: DARK ROOM, Emergency Concerts, DISCO, Hygge, Date your music and DARK RIDE and the Corona-production CIRCLES are enthusiastically received by audiences as well as the press, radio and television.
Since 2017, the orchestra has regularly been invited to national and international festivals such as the Podium Esslingen Festival, Mozart-Fest Würzburg, Niedersächsische Musiktage, Bayerischer Rundfunk München and the Fusion Festival. In the season 2018/19 the Orchester im Treppenhaus played among others at the Heidelberger Frühling, Grafenegg Festival and the Bodensee Festival. In 2008 Artistic Director Thomas Posth was awarded the Prätorius Musikpreis Niedersachsen. For »DARK ROOM – a musical gold rush in the dark«, the orchestra won the pro visio prize of the Kulturregion Hannover Foundation in 2015.
